Angel Paws Visit GLLP
Angel Paws red eye.jpg

A highlight of this past term was a visit to God’s Little Lambs when the younger children got to interact with some very special therapy dogs brought in by their handlers from the Angel Paws team.  While some were clearly very apprehensive to begin with, many came forward and enjoyed petting and brushing the dogs and even took them for a short walk with their owners. Thank you Angel Paws and we look forward to your next visit for the older children!

Early Childhood Development (ECD) Training

It is essential for our teachers to stay inspired and to keep up with new ways of doing things in the classroom and playground.  Our principal, Monica Ngobese, recently attended an ECD course and found it to be very useful.  She and the other teachers also spent a morning at Hilton Pre-Primary absorbing different ideas and methods – our thanks go to Sue Hilliar and her staff for their welcome and input.

Heritage Day

The children had  a lot of fun dressing up in colourful clothing for Heritage Day just before the holidays and were taught about Zulu culture and traditions by the teachers.

Building Plans and Maintenance

We are embarking on two projects to make better use of the space we have.  Currently under discussion is the division of our top classroom into two sections so as to reduce noise levels from combined classes happening at once.

Secondly, we would like to enclose the veranda so that it can be more fully utilised and be protected in the rainy season.  Our projects are completely donor-dependent so we will submit motivations to the likes of Lotto and the Community Chest in the hopes of getting some help there.  If you would like to assist us in this regard, we would be very thankful.  Do remember we are a PBO and your donation is tax deductible.

Wam Robinson has been hard at work building cupboards for the top classroom area so as to improve our storage. Thank you Wam!

Another project recently completed was the filling of the playground areas with wooden chips, kindly donated by Jacques Redman of Pallet Link.  Both teachers and parents are very happy as it means the children do not get as dirty, particularly in the wet weather.  We were very grateful for help from a number of our church’s youth (and some not-so-young church/committee members 😉) who spent a strenuous Saturday morning getting the job done.

Other Donations

We have been the recipients of some amazing donations these past couple of months.  The former owner of a local preschool gave us equipment that she no longer needed which our teachers are delighted with.  Our thanks to Jiff Bowmaker and her daughter for this.

We also had a wonderful anonymous donation to cover a brand-new washing machine (as well as soap powder),  which is so badly needed to wash the children’s blankets and nappies – previously done by hand, over a basin.  The machine and plumbing will be installed by Dave Goldsworthy who has volunteered his services.

An appeal went out for ice-cream boxes and toiletries for us to pack as Xmas gifts for the children. Thanks to the Greater Ambers and to the Howick Community Church, the response was excellent, and we will be adding some other small gifts to fill the boxes before their year-end party on 30th November.
